After several years as international students pursuing a career in medicine, we have encountered numerous challenges. Some challenges were minor and were easy to surmount once we had the right information. Others were Herculean and left us wishing we were equipped with information months before. Regardless of the situation, there was a constant paucity of individuals on a similar path who we could turn to for guidance. We often found ourselves trying to extrapolate answers to our questions based on answers to the same questions for American citizens/permanent residents and international/foreign medical graduates. And the answers we came up with were just that: extrapolations. Extrapolations that left a lot to be desired and clarified.
Many years later, it has become apparent that the lack of an easily accessible location for international students is a gap that needs to be filled, and we are choosing to fill that gap. We are not educators or trained advisors, but we are people who have lived through this very unique experience and we're offering up the knowledge we've gained from our experiences. We hope that the information we share allows you to be better prepared for some of the obstacles you might face on this path and set you up for greater success.
Whether you’re in college and considering the pre-med path as an international student or in medical school wondering about residency prospects as an international applicant, we are here to help. Our blog will have information on pressing topics that pertain to various stages of this journey. The Advising Network gives you access to international students currently in medical school and MDs who used to be international students in the US. These individuals have made themselves available to be resources on a more personal level to those interested. Lastly, feel free to ask pressing questions on the forum and hear back from the community.
